Enter the values and press Calculate. Numbers outside the allowed range produce no result.

How is it calculated?

About 40% of sodium chloride is sodium, so the factor is 2.5. 2000 mg of sodium is about 5 g of salt.

Salt (g) = sodium (mg) × 2.5 ÷ 1000

Reference table

400 mg1 g
2000 mg5 g
2300 mg5,8 g

How should you read the result?

Kidney, heart and blood-pressure conditions can require a lower personal limit. This tool does not change a prescribed salt restriction.

Frequently asked questions

How much salt per day?

WHO recommends staying under 5 g of salt per day for adults, about 2000 mg of sodium.

Are sodium and salt the same?

No. Salt is sodium plus chloride. One gram of salt has about 400 mg of sodium.

Where does most salt come from?

Bread, cheese, processed meat, instant soup and sauces can carry more salt than the shaker.

Is Himalayan salt lower in sodium?

The difference is negligible. Coloured salts are still mostly sodium chloride.
