Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator

BMI is a simple indicator of whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. Enter height and weight to see your BMI, category and healthy weight range.

Healthy weight

Healthy weight for your height (BMI 18.5–24.9): 53.5 – 72.0 kg

BMI can mislead for under-18s, pregnancy and very muscular people.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For 70 kg and 1.75 m: 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, in the healthy range.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat. Muscular athletes may appear overweight, while older adults can have high body fat with a normal BMI. Combine it with waist circumference and body fat. A waist above 88 cm (women) or 102 cm (men) is linked to higher risk.

BMI in children

For ages 2–18 the adult table does not apply; BMI is read against age- and sex-specific percentiles. Use the Child Growth Percentile tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal BMI?

For adults, 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy.

Am I overweight with a BMI of 25?

25.0–29.9 is the overweight range, but BMI can mislead if you are very muscular; check waist and body fat too.

Is BMI the same as VKİ?

Yes. VKİ is the Turkish abbreviation for body mass index.

Is BMI different for men and women?

The formula and adult categories are the same; only children use sex-specific percentiles.

Is the ideal BMI different for older adults?

Some studies suggest 23–27 may carry lower risk over 65. Targets for older adults should be set with a doctor.
