Antioxidants and Oxidative Stress: What You Need to Know

Antioxidants are heroic molecules that neutralize unstable molecules called 'free radicals' in our bodies by donating electrons. Free radicals can form due to air pollution, cigarette smoke, UV rays, and even during normal metabolism. If the delicate balance between free radicals and antioxidants is disrupted (favoring radicals), 'oxidative stress' occurs. Oxidative stress leads to DNA damage, cellular aging, and chronic inflammation.

Ways to Increase Antioxidant Capacity

  • Rainbow Diet: Vegetables and fruits of different colors contain various antioxidants (Lycopene, Anthocyanin, etc.).
  • Green Tea and Coffee: Drinks rich in polyphenols.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Provide strong protectors like selenium and vitamin E.
  • Avoid Smoking: A single puff of cigarette smoke contains trillions of free radicals.
