Waist–Hip Ratio Calculator
Divide waist by hip to calculate waist–hip ratio (WHR), a population-level marker of abdominal fat distribution.

Enter the values and press Calculate. Numbers outside the allowed range produce no result.
How is it calculated?
Measure standing, after exhaling. Waist is midway between the lowest rib and the hip bone. Hip is the widest point from behind. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
WHR = waist (cm) ÷ hip (cm)
Reference table
| Group | Increased risk |
|---|---|
| Men | > 0,90 |
| Women | > 0,85 |
How should you read the result?
It does not separate muscle from fat and is not for pregnancy. It is more useful alongside waist circumference and body fat.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy waist–hip ratio?
WHO treats ratios at or below 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as below the increased-risk cut-off.
Does waist or hip matter more?
The ratio needs both. Waist circumference alone is a separate risk marker for abdominal fat.
Can athletes be misclassified?
A narrow waist and wide hips lower the ratio; that is not automatically low body fat. Check a body-fat estimate too.
Is WHR the same as BMI?
No. BMI uses height and weight; WHR describes where fat sits.
