How is it calculated?
The 0.4 factor is an older clinical approach that treats about 40% of excess weight like lean tissue. If you are below ideal, adjusted weight equals actual weight.
After Devine ideal weight: Adjusted = ideal + 0.4 × (actual − ideal)
Reference table
| Case | Weight used |
|---|---|
| Actual > ideal | Ideal + 40% of the gap |
| Actual ≤ ideal | Actual weight |
How should you read the result?
Do not use it for medicine, anaesthesia or kidney dosing. Those calculations belong to current guidance and a pharmacist.
Frequently asked questions
What is adjusted weight for?
It was used historically so energy and protein estimates would not be inflated by excess weight. It is not a required goal weight.
Is it the same as ideal weight?
No. Only 40% of the gap is added to ideal weight.
Why Devine?
Devine is the most cited clinical ideal-weight formula. Other formulas are on the Ideal Weight tool.
For children?
No. The formula is for adult heights.
