How is it calculated?
Boer (1984) is a predictive equation. If you know body fat from a tape method or DEXA, the second result is more direct.
Men: 0.407×kg + 0.267×cm − 19.2 Women: 0.252×kg + 0.473×cm − 48.3 From fat %: weight × (1 − fat%/100)
Reference table
| Method | Inputs |
|---|---|
| Boer | Height, weight, sex |
| Body fat | Weight and fat % |
How should you read the result?
The equation does not account for edema, pregnancy or very high muscle mass. Do not use it to dose medicines.
Frequently asked questions
Is lean mass the same as muscle?
No. Muscle is only one part; water, bone and organs are included too.
How does lean mass increase?
Resistance training and enough protein are the main levers. This page estimates the current value; it does not promise a gain.
Why do the two results differ?
Boer assumes an average body for your size. A measured fat percentage reflects your own composition better.
Can children use it?
No. The equation is for adults.
